Best Linux Games Podcast: Episodes

Friday, September 15, 2017 - 2:37pm

This week, we take a (belated) "first look" at the incredibly crazy-hilarious black comedy that is the tragedy of "KINDERGARTEN," an old-school dialogue tree based point-and-click-style RPG where not everything is at seems (and gruesome murder lurks around every corner). Also: "Jettomero," problems with Plex, "Tooth and Tail," "Voxel Fury," and so much more!

This week, we gush over the automatronic wizbang sci-fi technological glory that is the I/O universe of "Factorio," a game so addictive, so purely brilliant, so simple, and so much fun that we demand - before listening to this week's episode - anyone reading this message to simply jump on Steam and download and play the free "Factorio" demo. Also: "XCom 2: War of the Chosen" DLC is out, we talk about NVENC and Open Broadcaster Software (and the problems that have ensued as we try to use both), and much much more....

Super excited to report to the pop-tastic candy-esploding ultra-sonic action-oriented contingent of the greater Linux universe that one of my favorite super-sonic split-second destruction-spraying semi-arcade-semi-sim titles ("Sky Rogue") has finally left early access status. Don't be fooled by the external shock-and-simplicity; the white-knuckled split-second experience conceals deep and addictive gameplay that runs like a stop-watch test of skills, strategy, tactics, and jet-based swashbuckling.

This week, we come to you (once again) from a somewhat jacked-up Linux Mint Cinnamon 18.1 Install and bring you the latest on where we are with SteamVR and the HTC Vive (it's not a happy picture at the present moment, but like all of FOSS - it's getting better).

We're working from a crippled system during this week's episode (our second recorded in under 72 hours), and we rant (and express profuse gratitude) about the state of FOSS assistance for Linux Mint 18.1 issues via IRC. Eventually, though, we cover the truly historic return of a now legendary (and all-but forgotten) game universe by welcoming the glorious victoly of "West of Loathing," a single player old school RPG with all the whit, charm, and visually arresting hi-def graphics sensibilities that once inspired bajillions of fans to high adventure, hilarity and hijinx in the "KINGDOM OF LOATHING." Finally, we cover the latest videogame-themed selection of delectable and superlative excellence offered in this month's "Summer Smash Games Bundle," 7 titles, DRM free, pay what you like, curated by one of the best minds in the business, Simon Carless. Tech problems be damned, phone calls from creditors, made fugitive from the bowels of IRC tech support channels, and without even the benefit of the internet itself, BLGP spits its own blood and teeth and microchips out, wipes the sputum and grease from its beard using its shirt cuff, and stares into the depths of episode 146 and says, "Do your worst, mofos: cause an adventurer is me!" And you can too! Get the Storybundle Summer Smash: BLG Column: Again on hiatus till next week as we battle our Cinnamon tech problems

NEW THIS WEEK: President Nixon goes totally insane once he discovers that Open Broadcaster Software (OBS) has recently polished its Linux release to diamond-sharp razor's edge. Meaning? THAT NOW, FINALLY, Linux users can livestream to Twitch using big-boy hardcore-capable, FOSS software. All this, new games, 2 great deals, and MUCH MUCH MOAR NIXON!
BLG The Column: This week, we take a 3 hour jaunt through "Sundered":

This week, we get totally sidetracked from our regularly scheduled programming ("Slime-San," "Armored Freedom"), and bring you a review of the excellent Thrustmaster T-Flight Hotas X (see link below). PLUS: 2 excellent deals, and - of course - the column will be up later on in the week.
